In North Carolina, property crimes can include:

These types of crimes may be charged as misdemeanors or felonies, depending on the specifics of the offense. The value of the property stolen or damaged is one factor in determining the charge. Stealing goods that are worth more than $1,000 will generally result in a Class H felony. Typically, you will be charged with a misdemeanor for theft of goods valued at or less than $1,000.

Breaking and entering charges can be misdemeanors or felonies as well. Simply breaking and entering a building is a Class 1 misdemeanor. However, breaking and entering a building with the intent of committing a crime or terrorizing the occupant is a Class H felony. Penalties for conviction of a felony can include years in prison, large fines and additional consequences.
